In Memory of Benja

It's been a while. Life's been hitting hard, so haven't exactly had the energy to draw.
14th of June my dear dog Benja passed away. Luckily I made it in time back to Finland to spend some time with her.
I sketched this in Ireland, while waiting for the day of my flight. It was agonizing not to be by her side, especially once I found out that she didn't have much time left. I only had enough energy to finish this last night.

So, as you may have already figured out, this is dedicated to my dear friend and family member Benja. Unfortunately my drawings of her can never match how cute and beautiful she was.
I still don't know how I'm going to live without her.

I can only hope the pain will start fade away eventually and that I'll have energy to continue my life without her. And hopefully it'll become easier to draw again.

I’ve procrastinated enough to put this up, although I drew this months ago. Around February or March. Never got around coloring it (actually started, and hated it and sank in to a slump). I draw these guys every now and then, mostly out of nostalgia.

These teenage-jerk-bags found a high school band called the Handbasket. If I ever made a comic of them, it’d be pretty much be about their retarded teenage-adventures. And the other two band-members (Sylvian and Leo) putting up with their megalomaniac pseudo-feminine vocalist (Deeca) who wants to make it big in the music business some day.

Not sure if I’ll ever get around to making a comic about them. Problems being I’m lazy and suck at writing scripts.

Had to take my dog to the vet over the weekend, and we had to queue for over 4 hours. Luckily my dad had a tiny notepad and a ballpoint pen with him, so I could kill the time a bit.
I've been needing to practice drawing animals anyway. (Hence why these are dreadful.)

There was also a 15-year-old dachshund, who wouldn't leave Benja (my dog) alone.

Little Prince comic

Again, this was an assignment for college - our class was meant to illustrate a sequence from a book of our choice and bind a book. My choice was The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Originally I planned to make illustrations along with some text, until my teacher gave me thumbs up to do a comic. Something I haven't had much time for during college.

Originally I was planning to add color or pencil/graphite shading to the comic, but unfortunately I ran out of time. I think I still might color/shade this over the summer, as I didn't get some of the atmosphere across as I wanted.
I had to summarize the story a bit as well, hope you enjoy it nevertheless. Please click the thumbnails to enlarge! :B

As long as I have tried to become a cartoonist, I was surprised to realize that this 12-page comic is actually the longest comic I've managed to draw.

The New Yorker

These were done for a college assignment; the idea was to illustrate a cover for the New Yorker, featuring Eustace Tilley, created by Rea Irvin. Eustace Tilley debuted on the first cover of the New Yorker and reappears on anniversary issues.

For one version I replaced Tilley with Jay Leno with a flyswatter and the butterfly with Conan O'Brien, referring to the Tonight Show conflict. (I'M WITH COCO!!)

I've started practising with watercolours again, but I'm always so paranoid about ruining the picture with my sloppy lazy colouring skills, that I scan the line art before adding colour.

I used golden acrylic for the background pattern, unfortunately it doesn't look that good scanned. :(

The character below is from a PS2 game Odin's Sphere. I don't draw that much fan art these days, but I just couldn't resist drawing Velvet.

I actually prefer the non-coloured... Still so much to learn! D:

Thanks to the encouragement of few of my old classmates, I finally decided to start this blog and to waste more online space. Rejoice!

So this is my first post! What will be the point of this blog?

Well, I'll be putting up some of my work here: personal- and college work; sketches, finished drawings and designs etc. Hopefully keeping this blog will help me progress as an illustrator/designer/whatever, and if not, I hope someone can get a kick out of my updates, whatever they may be in the future.
